Pencil hardness test

Pencil hardness test

Using the pencil scraping hardness test, we establish the resistance of powder lacquer coated surfaces against scraping effects. During scratching hardness test, we draw a pencil on the surface of the coating with a specified pressure. The result of the test is determined by the hardness of the pencil which leaves a mark on the surface of the coating.

At pencil hardness test, we draw pencils with different hardness (beginning with the hardest one) with a pressure of 7.5 N an in an angle of 45° on the surface to be tested. The hardness of the pencil that scratches the surface is identical with the pencil hardness of the coating examined. For the test, we use 20 pencils of different hardness between 9B and 9H.

In our laboratory, we perform our measurements using a GYK Gardner on the samples coated by the partner as standard.  We summarize the data and deliver them to our clients in measuring logs. Usually we undertake measurements upon advance booking within 1 business day in our own site, depending on the availability of the measuring instrument.
